MTYFC U12 Girls v Swindon Town (Cup)
MTYFC battle hard in first game for 2 months.
Melksham's first competitive match of 2008, saw them travel to Swindon in order to play Swindon Town Reds in a cup match. This was Melksham's first game since the end of November due to match postponements.
After a slow start for both teams, Swindon took advantage of a mix up in the box to fire home to make the score 1-0. Swindon continued to dominate causing problems for the Melksham defence only to be haltered several times by Melksham's goal keeper Courtney. Swindon's chances kept coming until a deflected corner seemed to find its way past the post & into the back of the net. (2-0).
With the pressure mounting, Melksham began to play with neat passing from Ellie & Evan in defence, through Lozza, Tash & Mel in midfield who slotted accurate balls beyond the Swindon back line to set Jess free. Jess was very unlucky not to convert two of those chances into very good team goals.
Just before half time and after several decent corners Melksham finally got on the score sheet. Jess was alleged to have been pushed by the Swindon midfield so a Shannon set piece was asked for. An accurate free kick was slotted past the Swindon keeper to place the score at 2-1 at halftime.
Melksham began the second half where they left off with strong clearances by Captain Evan and defensive wing play by Kirsty. Another well taken cross by Shannon saw her deflected cross go in off of a Swindon defender. (2-2)
Melksham's match fitness seemed to drop off quite quickly in the second half with Swindon playing very much on the break to score two in close succession to increase their lead to 4-2.
Mel, Jess and Shannon continued to push forward in search of goals but were unable to convert further Melksham chances.
Courtney was placed under immense pressure after Swindon managed to get through the Melksham defence three times only to be left one on one with the Melksham keeper. Courtney managed to come out victor of every chance until the dying minutes of the game when she was lobbed by a hopeful chip. (5-2)
Melksham's never give up spirit showed, and i am positive the next couple of weeks will ensure Melksham's form will return with a busy fixture list ahead.
