Wootton Bassett Tournament - Sunday 8 June 2008

U8 Robins play well at Wootton Bassett Tournament

The Robins first tournament of the summer will be remembered for ever by players and supporters as the team came away with their first trophy. Played in perfect weather (for cricket) this well organised day involved 6 teams in The Robins group.

Game 1

Stratton Junior’s: The Robins enjoyed plenty of possession in the first half but had to wait until the second half before creating a clear chance, Josh’s throw into space for Haken to run at goal and shoot but Strattons goalie saved well. Then Elliott put a header just wide before a looping cross from Josh was side footed on the volley very coolly by Zak. Result 1:0

Game 2

Wootton Bassett: The Robins dug deep to come back from going a goal behind when a powerful long range shot just beat Nathan at his near post. But not even a disallowed goal by Haken held them back as Tom popped up with the all important equaliser. Result 1:1

Game 3

Lydiard Youth: These 4 minutes each half game’s were really quick but a pattern in The Robins play was becoming apparent, Adam wins the ball, plays it forward and the others seem to have a good understanding between them to provide each other with opportunities to score. Haken was the receiver of such when he was played in by Tom and this time made sure he put it wide of the keeper. Result 1:0

Game 4

Highworth Town: Highworth were notably a very good side and had won their previous games with ease. The Robins task was not made easier when Highworth scored from a corner, but they did not let their heads drop and tried to get an equaliser. Although it proved illusive Elliott and Adam ensured Nathan didn’t have too much to do. Result 0:1

Game 5

Greenmeadow: The final game of a very enjoyable afternoon was well worth the wait. An early goal for The Robins came after a succession of corners taken by Josh; eventually one was turned into the goal by an unlucky defender. However Greenmeadow came back and equalised before half time. The game then ebbed and flowed before Haken drilled in the winner just before the final whistle. Result 2:1

The presentation of medals for all players then took place and finally the award for Most Sportsmanship Team. All the referees had given a mark out of 10 to each team after every game and the winners had scored 10 out of 10 in all their games. Step forward Melksham Town B.

Well done lads, feel proud of yourselves you deserved it, also praise to Darren for instilling this sportsman like morale in the team
