UNDER 8 ROBINS PICK UP 2ND SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD AT MARLBOROUGH TOURNAMENT
Another early start for the Robins at Marlborough for their last tournament of the season, 4 games to be played in very hot conditions, typical English summer?
First up, Marlborough A. Memories of our encounters against Marlborough early in the season still lingered but our players showed just how much they have improved with a well earned 0:0 draw neither team creating that vital clear cut chance to grab glory.
Next Marlborough B. With their tails up from the first result the Robins played with great confidence and created enough half chances to maybe steal a win but Marlborough defended doggedly and managed to hold out for a 0:0 draw.
Now for the “BIG ONE” the much anticipated derby against the Saints. The confidence was still there and they were more than holding their own when they got a throw-in deep in the Saints half. Josh waited for Haken to make his trademark spin and launched a long throw over his head; Haken let it bounce twice then smacked it with the outside of his foot inside the near post 1:0. The Saints battled hard for an equalizer but a combination of great defending by Elliott and Miahraul and superb goalkeeping from Nathan thwarted all attempts and the win was secured.
Last up Blunsden, who along with the Robins had caught the eye. Darren emphasised the importance of not resting on their laurels and when Haken slipped an early pass through to Josh who finished coolly the job maybe seemed done. But Blunsden had other ideas and immediately equalized taking the celebrating Robins by surprise. Their heads did not drop though and they ploughed forward and got their reward with a second goal, this time Kieren popped up in the right place at the right time to fire home. Kieren then produced some great defending, helping out Elliott and Miahraul and Blunsden`s only real chance was denied by the feet of Nathan. 2:1.
Their day was completed by winning the sportsmanship award, a trophy each this time!
Well done to, firstly the players for giving us such great entertainment all season.
Secondly to Darren, his enthusiasm and influence are beginning to bear fruit.
Thirdly to all supporters, Mums, Dads, Brothers, Sisters, Grandparents, Relatives and Dogs, your support has been gratefully received.
