U9 Saints v Corsham Leopards 9th Feb Cup Quarter Final

The U9 Saints fought valiantly in their cup quarter final match against Corsham Leopards drawing 1 all in the game and losing only on penalties.

Throughout the game the Saints constantly challenged Corsham moving the ball forward and taking many close attempts on goal. Mattie got Corsham worried with his long runs down the pitch “Watch Number 8” said the Corsham Coach “He’s a runner”. Eddie and Tom Thompson maintained a solid defence blocking Corsham’s attempts on goal. Captain Jack House took control of the mid field constantly winning the ball and sending it forward towards the goal. Kieran made some excellent saves.

The Saints scored first when Corsham scored an own goal in a skirmish at the goal mouth. Corsham scored one minute before half time with a very close goal captured by Kieran on the line but the Referee gave the goal.

In the second half the atmosphere was very tense as the players fought hard to score but without success.

The match went to extra time 5 minutes each way. Again a tense atmosphere, more near misses and no goals scored.

To penalties best out of three and then sudden death. Corsham went first, Kieran made a brilliant save. Kai took his penalty narrowly missing as the ball glanced past the cross bar. Corsham shot high, Eddie took his turn shooting on target but was saved by the keeper. Corsham scored – this could be it but Robert saved the day with a fantastic goal. Now sudden death. Corsham missed. It was Jack’s turn he fired towards the goal but the keeper saved. Fortunately for Saints Corsham had changed keepers, so we appealed and the referee told Jack to take his shot again. Jack and the goal keeper were in position – the ref checked they were ready – Jack took his shot and Scored we’d Won!!!! Only for the ref to say – sorry the whistle hadn’t blown you need to take the shot again. Jack took his penalty one more time the Corsham keeper saved it. Corsham took their next penalty and scored. Saints took another penalty and didn’t. The dream was over but the boys all tried really well. Well done Saints.
